a mound of rubble that was once the ancient city of Djeba, or Apollinopolis Magna.
The local deity was Horus the Elder, who was identified with Apollo by the Greeks, and the city was born where Horus is supposed to have killed Seth, who had murdered his own father Osiris.
Still in magnificent condition, the Temple of Horus is situated right in the middle of the town of Edfu. It is possibly the best preserved monument of the entire ancient world.
According to legend, it was built following a model that came raining down from the sky at Saqqara at the time of Imhotep. It was begun in 237 B.C. on the foundations of an earlier temple and was finished in 57 B.C.
